Tony Allen, state geotechnical engineer at the Washington State Department of Transportation in Olympia, Washington, has received the L. David Suits Award from ASTM International.
The Suits Award recognizes individuals who have shown extensive commitment to the geosynthetic field through exemplary contributions that have resulted in a significant growth of knowledge, testing, testing equipment or products. Allen has been a member of ASTM Committee D35 on Geosynthetics since 2013.
Allen specializes in geotechnical engineering, particularly focusing on foundation and wall design, landslides, geosynthetics and geotechnical seismic design. He joined WSDOT in 1983 as a foundations engineer and assumed his current role in 1993.
Outside ASTM, Allen is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the International Geosynthetics Society, the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, North American Geosynthetics Society and Tau Beta Pi – the Engineering Honor Society. He has received several international industry awards, including the 2015 Geosynthetic Materials Association (GMA) Friend of the Industry Award for the development of the AASHTO National Transportation Product Evaluation Program Geotextile Audit program.
Allen holds a B.S. in civil engineering and an M.S. geotechnical engineering from Oregon State University.
