ASTM International Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems has honored Jim Craig, a consultant based in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, with the Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow.

The Award of Merit is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities. Craig was cited for his outstanding dedicated service and leadership since joining ASTM and Committee F17 in 1992.

Craig’s contributions have led to the development of several internationally recognized standards that have enhanced the reliability, durability and safety of plastics in piping systems. As the longtime chairman of Subcommittee F17.20 on Joining, he worked on numerous ASTM standards important to the underground plastic piping industry. The committee has recognized his work with several past awards, including two Special Service Awards, the Paul Finn Memorial Award and the Ayres-Wilging Award for Professionalism.

A graduate of Kansas State College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in machine design, Craig received his professional engineers license in the state of Oklahoma in 1993. He spent most of his professional career at McElroy Manufacturing Inc. in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There he held various executive roles related to the polyethylene pipe industry, including national sales manager, industry relations manager and director of research and development. He was also actively involved in fusion training for contractors, engineers and manufacturers through the company’s training program. Craig retired from McElroy in 2013 after 40 years of service and began his consultancy work.

Outside ASTM, Craig has been an active contributing member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Welding Society and the Plastics Pipe Institute for several years. He received the Plastics Pipe Institute Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.
