Norbert Krogstad, principal at Wiss Janney Elstner Associates Inc. (WJE) in Chicago, Illinois, has received the ASTM International Award of Merit. The award, which includes the accompanying title of ASTM fellow, is the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.

A member of ASTM International since 1986, Krogstad was honored for his contributions to the development of standard test methods related to the use of manufactured masonry units of fired clay and shale, concrete and sand-lime units within Committee C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units. He is active on several C15 task groups and currently chairs C15.05.07 on Masonry Construction Tolerance. Krogstad made many contributions to the C15-sponsored Masonry Symposium in 2010 and 2014, both technical and as co-chair. He is also active on Committees C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry and E06 on Performance of Buildings.

A graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he received a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a master’s in architecture - structures option, Krogstad joined Wiss Janney Elstner Associates Inc. in 1983. WJE is an interdisciplinary firm of structural engineers, architects and materials scientists that specializes in the investigation, analysis, testing and design of repairs for historic and contemporary structures. He has investigated distress conditions in several hundred existing buildings and provided consulting services on numerous cladding systems during his tenure at WJE.

A registered architect in the states of Illinois, Minnesota and Missouri, Krogstad is also a member of the The Masonry Society (TMS). He has published and lectured extensively on issues related to exterior facade systems, including authoring a monthly question and answer column in the magazine Masonry Construction from 1989 to 2011.
