Mark E. Peden, senior professional scientist emeritus at the Illinois State Water Survey in Champaign, Ill., has received the Moyer D. Thomas Award from ASTM International.

ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality recognized Peden for his outstanding achievements in the standardization of the sampling and analysis of atmospheres. 

A member of ASTM International since 1983, Peden is an active member of Committee D22, where he serves as vice chair of Subcommittee D22.01 on Quality Control. The committee honored him with the Award of Merit, ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities, in 1997. A fellow of ASTM, he is also a member of Committee D19 on Water.

Peden, who holds a bachelor’s degree in botany from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, worked for the Illinois State Water Survey for 30 years, holding the positions of atmospheric chemist/chemistry division head and director of external relations and quality assurance, until his retirement in 2002.
