The 2004 Bryant Mather Award honors Louis U. Spellman, a consultant to the cement industry headquartered in Austin, Texas, for his work to further the continuing development of standards for hydraulic cement. ASTM International Committee C01 on Cement gave the award to Spellman, an ASTM Award of Merit recipient and ASTM fellow, in December.

Spellman has been involved with ASTM International Committee on Cement since 1961 and has been an active participant on C01 activities and task groups. He has been chair of C01.10 on Portland Cement and is a member of the editorial board for the ASTM Cement and Concrete Journal.

Author of numerous technical papers on portland and slag cements, including a P.H. Bates Award winner, Spellman has specialized in the manufacture of cement from blast-furnace slag, a by-product of the steel industry. He has actively promoted the inclusion of slag cement in government specifications and is responsible for guiding the first production and marketing effort for slag cement in the United States.

Spellman became a cement industry consultant following his retirement as executive vice president and director of the Atlantic Cement Company, where he was responsible for most areas of company business. He also gained industry experience from positions with the Marquette Cement Co., Halliburton Portland Cement Co., and Plymouth Oil Co.

Spellman is a graduate of Southwestern University where he earned a B.S. in physics and mathematics.
