Guy T. Avellon, president of GT Technical Consultants in Wauconda, Ill., where he also resides, has been honored with a 2005 ASTM Award of Merit and the accompanying title of fellow for his contributions to the work of ASTM Committee F16 on Fasteners. The award is the highest Society recognition for individual participation in standards activities.

Avellon, who joined ASTM International in 1980, is chair of F16.01 on Test Methods, a leadership role he has filled for many years. He is also a member of Committees A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Materials, B08 on Metallic and Inorganic Coatings, E08 on Fatigue and Fracture, and E28 on Mechanical Testing. In his involvement with F16, Avellon has been a major contributor to the development of standard test methods for various bolts, washers, rivets, and fasteners, and he has been responsible for ongoing revisions to keep pace with changes in industry. He has, in addition, worked to harmonize related standards from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) with ASTM documents.

Professionally, Avellon consults on failure analysis and process improvements as well as fastener training. His expertise also includes applications, ISO quality systems, marketing and operations improvement, and manuals. His previous industry affiliations, including the manufacturing side of the fasteners business, includes Thermo-O-Disc, Lea-Ronal, Bowman Distribution, and KAR Products.

Avellon earned his B.S. in metallurgical engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. Outside ASTM International, he is a member of the American Society for Quality and the Society of Automotive Engineers. Avellon can be reached at FastenerRx@BoltDoc.com.
