Chris J. May, Ph.D., an OEM advisor in the Research Department at Imperial Oil Ltd. in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, has received the Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from ASTM International.  The Award of Merit is the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.

May was cited “for outstanding contributions in Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and Subcommittee D02.07 on Flow Properties toward standards development both as an individual contributor and leader.”  A member of ASTM International since 1987, May is the current chair of D02.07, and he has lead various work groups focused on the development of lubricant test methods related to engine performance.  Committee D02 has recognized his work twice before, with the D02 Award of Excellence in 1999 and an award of appreciation in 2008.

A graduate of the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he received his Ph.D. in chemistry, May joined the staff at Imperial Oil as a research chemist in 1981.  His research work at Imperial has focused on the development and testing of automotive lubricants, and he has a filled a number of roles in the company’s Passenger Car Lubricants Group.  He assumed his current role in 2005. 

In addition to ASTM International, May is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed papers on the development and application of ASTM standards in the automotive lubricant market.
