STP 1474, Skiing Trauma and Safety:  Sixteenth Volume, is now available from ASTM International.  STP 1474 contains ten peer-reviewed papers that provide the latest information on winter sports safety.  Topics covered in the publication include:
 
• Injuries in Norwegian ski resorts 2002-2004—concludes that injured alpine skiers were more prone to knee injuries compared to all other types of winter sports; skiboarders were the most prone to lower leg fractures, and injured snowboarders were most prone to suffer wrist injuries; and more.
 • Observational study on fall trends in snowboarding—evaluates fall trends in terrain parks and half-pipes.
 • On piste fatalities in recreational snow sports—examines traumatic fatalities occurring to recreational skiers and snowboarders in the U.S. between 1992 and 2005.
• Arthroscopic treatment of the first anterior shoulder dislocation in young skiers
• Evaluation of the protective role of helmets in snowboarding—discusses snowboarding injuries with and without the use of helmets in a backward fall simulation at realistic speeds.
• Functional and release characteristics of alpine ski equipment—examines data gathered between December 1997 and April 2004 which evaluates differences between the release moments of equipment associated with lower extremity injuries and uninjured controls using a commercially available testing device.
