Steve Daniewicz, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Mississippi State University, Starkville, Mississippi, has received the ASTM International Award of Merit.

The Award of Merit, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities. ASTM Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture noted Daniewicz’s exceptional leadership and outstanding contributions to the development of fatigue crack growth standard test methods.

An ASTM member since 1995, Daniewicz has led several E08 subcommittees and task groups during his tenure, specifically E08.01 on Research and Education, which he has chaired since 2002. He has chaired and assisted in the organization of three major international symposia on fatigue and fracture mechanics and helps involve students in ASTM through E08’s popular annual student presentation forum. This program offers students a hand-on look at standards development. The committee presented him with the Keith J. Miller Young Investigator Award in 1999 and several Awards of Appreciation since.

Daniewicz received his doctorate in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in welding engineering from Ohio State University, and holds a bachelor’s in welding engineering technology from Arizona State University. He was a research engineer at the Babcock and Wilcox Co. in Alliance, Ohio, before joining the faculty at Mississippi State in 1994. He served as head of the MSU Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2011 to 2013, and currently acts as special assistant to the dean.

Outside ASTM, Daniewicz is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He also serves as the ASTM representative for the U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
