ASTM Compass Adds Two Critical UK Aviation Fuel Standards

UK Ministry of Defense’s 91-090 and 91-091 now available through Compass.

May 06, 2025

The United Kingdom Ministry of Defense (MoD) has made two key standards, Defence Standards 91-090 and 91-091, available through Compass, ASTM’s proprietary standards and knowledge-based subscription resource.

Defence Standards 91-090 and 01-091 address aviation gasoline and kerosene-based jet fuel, respectively. They support quality performance, operational readiness, regulatory compliance, global consistency across the defense, aviation, and commercial sectors. These specifications are internationally recognized, and the ability to access them through Compass’s workflow tools will help promote high-quality aviation fuel management.

An ASTM D02.J Aviation Committee member offered the following insight into the history of the specifications: “With respect to aviation turbine fuel, the origin was the very first specification, RDE/F/KER, later renamed DERD then Defence Standard 91-091 as referenced today. Avgas has followed a similar path, moving from DERD and then to Defence Standard 91-090 today. Alongside the specifications, the Energy Institute (EI) has worked with the aviation industry to develop an extensive set of fuel handling, quality assurance and filtration guidelines. These are all key documents and used on a global basis.”

The standards are most relevant to midstream and downstream personnel in quality assurance, refinery and transport, and at airports and third-party testing labs. Defence Standard 91-090 is typically used for small or private airports and for aircraft spark ignition piston engines, while 91-091 is common among larger airlines for aircraft turbine engines.
