Alan Viets, senior chemist at BASF Corp., Cincinnati, Ohio, has been recognized by ASTM International Committee E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials and Alternative Control Agents with the Award of Merit.
The Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities. Viets was honored for his outstanding dedication to the committee and exceptional initiative in the promotion of ASTM E35 standards globally.
A member of ASTM and Committee E35 since 1988, Viets is secretary of Subcommittee E35.22 on Pesticide Formulations and Delivery Systems. He serves as a representative of E35.22 in groups such as the German speaking Working Group for Plant Protection Product Formulations (DAPF) and the Chemical Analytical Working Group of the Collaborative International Pesticides Analytical Council (CIPAC), which has resulted in mutual recognition of CIPAC/ASTM standards, avoiding the need for the respective organizations to develop duplicate standards. He received an E35 Award of Recognition in 2001.
Viets specializes in pesticides and pesticide-related formulations for crops and animals. He assumed his role at BASF Corp. in 2010. Prior to that, he was a project leader at Bayer CropScience in Monheim am Rhein, Germany, and director of NAFTA formulation development at Bayer CropScience in Kansas City, Missouri. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri, where he received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.
