ASTM International Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates has named Anthony Fiorato as its new chairman. Fiorato is senior consultant and non-executive chairman of the board of CTLGroup in Skokie, Ill., which provides engineering, scientific and testing services to the construction and related industries. ASTM Committee C09 consists of approximately 900 members responsible for more than 155 standards published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards that are essential to the construction of civil infrastructure.
ASTM International Committee C09, jointly with Committee C01 on Cement, oversees the activities of the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL), which operates programs that promote the quality of testing in construction materials laboratories. These are the inspection and proficiency sample programs that provide laboratories with a mechanism for improving the quality of their testing of hydraulic cement, portland cement concrete and aggregates, steel reinforcing bars, pozzolans and masonry materials using ASTM standards.
An active member of ASTM International, Fiorato currently serves on ASTM Committees C01 and E36 on Laboratory and Inspection Agency Accreditation in addition to his work with Committee C09. He is chairman of Subcommittee C09.61 on Testing for Strength and the Executive Committee of CCRL (ASTM C01.96/C09.96). He has served on the ASTM board of directors since 2001 and was chairman of the board in 2006.
Fiorato holds a B.S. in civil engineering from Drexel University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Illinois. He is a licensed structural engineer in Illinois and a professional engineer in Arizona, Michigan and Ohio. His technical activities interface engineering properties and durability of concrete with structural design, construction and performance characteristics. He has been active in research and consulting, and has authored over 60 publications on cement and concrete technology.
In addition to his work with ASTM International, Fiorato is a fellow and past president of the American Concrete Institute. He currently serves on ACI's board of directors, Financial Advisory Committee, ACI Committee 318 Structural Concrete Building Code, and the Board Advisory Committee on the International Organization for Standardization's Technical Committee 71 on Concrete, Reinforced Concrete and Prestressed Concrete.
Fiorato is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association Research and Engineering Standards Committee, the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute and the Post-Tensioning Institute.
