Adam G. Holterhoff, Jr., Manager of Technical Services for Heidelberger Calcium Aluminates in Valparaiso, Ind. , has been honored with a 2006 Award of Merit and accompanying title of Fellow by ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials). ASTM Committee C08 on Refractories cited Holterhoff, a member since 1984, for his leadership and contributions to the committee in developing and maintaining refractory tests and terminology. The award is the highest ASTM recognition for individual participation in standards activities.
A resident of Valparaiso , Holterhoff is currently Secretary of C08, and he also serves on Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates. Over the years of his work on Committee C08, he has made significant contributions to standards development in C08.09 on Monolithics. In addition, Holterhoff has been instrumental in keeping the committee's terminology standard current.
Professionally, Holterhoff is involved with the application and technology of calcium aluminate cements, particularly those for the refractory and building chemistry industries. Before joining the staff of Heidelberger Calcium Aluminates, Holterhoff held positions at Lehigh Portland Cement, Kaiser Refractories, and Kohler Co.
Author of a number of articles about Committee C08 activities and various other technical papers, Holterhoff is a member of the Refractory Ceramics Division and the Northwest Indiana Section of the American Ceramic Society. He has recently served a term as chairman of the Refractory Ceramics Division and continues on its executive board. Holterhoff has been a member of the American Concrete Institute and the Refractories Institute. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Ceramic Engineering degree.
