ASTM International’s exoskeletons and exosuits committee (F48) has launched a new task group focused on developing mechanical testing protocols for exoskeletons.
“This task group is a critical step toward harmonizing global standards and enabling real-world certification for exoskeletons,” says Matthew Dickinson, chair of F48’s maintenance and disposal subcommittee (F48.04). “By adapting proven frameworks, we’re laying the foundation for training and certification for exoskeletons.”
Dickinson further notes the significance of a new, unified framework that aligns global standards and promotes the safe adoption of exoskeletons in industrial, medical, consumer, and defense sectors. “This initiative represents a major shift from theoretical safety to validated performance, which is crucial for certification, laboratory readiness, and building trust in the exoskeleton market,” adds Dickinson.
The task group’s first steps will include mapping existing standards, identifying gaps, and adapting ISO 10328 for multi-joint, multi-user exoskeletons. This will lay the groundwork to define baseline test categories, lab infrastructure requirements, and pilot protocols to support certification and training.
