On April 23, approximately 100 third-grade students from Whitehall Elementary School in Norristown, Pa., enjoyed exploring nature during an ASTM International-sponsored field trip to the Woodmont Estate in Gladwyne, Pa. During the trip, the classmates participated in a science program presented by Riverbend Environmental Education Center’s nature program.
The educational trip focused on stream and pond exploration, which coincides with the third-graders’ current science lessons. The students experimented with a plastic watershed model to learn about how things that are originally on land will eventually end up in water, and explored the stream and ponds of Woodmont to investigate macro-invertebrate activity.
Riverbend’s mission is to “teach environmental principles to children in Southeastern Pennsylvania through a direct connection with nature, inspiring respect for our natural world and action as aware, responsible and caring citizens.” ASTM sponsors several nature field trips a year for local elementary schools in the Colonial, Norristown and Upper Merion school districts.
