The 2004 H. R. Russ Ogden Award was given to David L. Douglass, Ph.D. a professor emeritus, University of CaliforniaLos Angeles (UCLA), and a research professor at the University of Arizona, who lives in Tucson, Ariz. ASTM Committee B10 on Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys honored Douglass for his outstanding accomplishments in the science and technology of reactive and refractory metals and alloys.
Douglass, a fellow of the American Society for Metals, taught courses in materials science, metals, reactions, and corrosion at UCLA. In his career he concentrated on high-temperature corrosion and physical metallurgy.
After earning his Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering from Ohio State University, Douglass became manager of alloy studies at the General Electric Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady, N.Y. He soon moved to the GE Vallecitos Atomic Laboratory in Pleasanton, Calif., and then to the Sanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, Calif. In 1968 he then assumed a position as professor at UCLA and remained there until his retirement in 1992.
Author or co-author of more than 100 papers and publications related to his field, Douglass has also served on editorial boards, consulted to large corporations, and served as an expert witness for many law firms. Douglass is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, where he earned his B. S. and M.S. in metallurgy.
