ASTM International’s committee on fatigue and fracture (E08) presented its top annual award – the Award of Merit – to Enrico Lucon of the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), Boulder, Colorado, USA. The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards. 

Lucon was recognized for exceptional and sustained technical contributions in the development of fracture mechanics test methods; for leadership of task groups and subcommittees; and for advancing technical knowledge through symposia, workshops and publication activities. 

An ASTM International member since 1995, Lucon is also a member of the committees on nuclear technology and applications (E10), and mechanical testing (E28). He has previously been awarded the Award of Appreciation (2003) from the committee on nuclear technology and applications, the Award of Appreciation (2003 and 2010) from the committee on mechanical testing, and the Award of Appreciation (2011) from the committee on fatigue and fracture. 

Lucon is a materials scientist with NIST, having previously held positions with the Belgian Nuclear Research Center, SCK•CEN, and the Centro Informazioni Studi Esperienze (CISE) in Italy. He holds a degree in nuclear engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. 

In addition to ASTM International, Lucon is also a member of ISO Technical Committee 164 on mechanical testing of metals.
