ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics has honored the dedicated participation and valued leadership of John Thompson, product design and development engineer/deputy technical manager at Tinius Olsen Testing Machine Co. in Horsham, Pennsylvania, with the Award of Merit.

The Award of Merit, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.

Thompson works on several D20 subcommittees and chairs D20.10 on Mechanical Properties, which oversees more than 40 international plastics standards. An ASTM member since 1994, he has received several awards for his committee contributions, including the Award of Excellence in 2013 and the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2011.

A graduate of the DeVry Technical Institute of Technology (OIT), Columbus, Ohio, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electronics, Thompson began his career with Tinius Olsen in 1987 as an electronics engineer. He was promoted to systems engineer and then product design engineer before assuming his current role in 2010. Thompson specializes in electronic controls, sensors, software and plastics testing equipment.

Thompson is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in addition to ASTM.
