The 2007 Robert J. Painter Award honors the contributions of John D. Lambert, vice president and program executive at Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) in Sterling, Va. The award, given by ASTM International and the Standards Engineering Society, recognizes Lambert's exceptional service in advancing the cause of voluntary standardization for unmanned undersea vehicle systems and for leadership in developing timely and relevant standards to serve an evolving industry.
Lambert lives in Aldie, Va.
An ASTM International member since 2005, Lambert serves as chair of Committee F41 on Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) Systems, a group that includes about 100 members who develop standards in three technical subcommittees on autonomy and control, communications and mission payload interface.
Following his retirement from active duty with the U.S. Navy, Lambert took a position with SAIC in 2003. Currently, he manages and coordinates the efforts of several divisions engaged in developing unmanned systems across the undersea, air, surface and ground community. In his career, he has concentrated on the management and technical direction of unmanned vehicle systems; U.S. Navy intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems; and associated programs.
Lambert earned a B.S. in physics from Providence College and an M.S. in systems technology from the Naval Postgraduate School. In addition to his ASTM activities, Lambert is executive vice president of the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), and he is a member of the Naval Submarine League, the Navy League, the Naval Institute and the National Defense Industrial Association.
