Jerome Klosowski, scientist emeritus of Dow Corning Corp. and president of Klosowski Scientific Inc., Bay City, Mich., has received the Walter C. Voss Award from ASTM International. The Voss Award is presented annually to an engineer or scientist who has made notable contributions in the field of building technology.

A fellow of ASTM, Klosowski received the Voss Award in recognition of “outstanding contributions that constitute significant advances and innovations to the science of building seals and sealants.”
 
Klosowski, who joined ASTM International in 1977, is a longtime member of Committee C24 on Building Seals and Sealants and has chaired several C24 subcommittees, including the U.S. delegation to ISO TC 59/Subcommittee 8 on Sealants (C24.87). He also serves on Committees D04 on Road and Paving Materials, D14 on Adhesives and E06 on Performance of Buildings. He received the C24 Lou Toporcer Hall of Fame Award in 1984 and the ASTM Award of Merit in 1985.

Klosowski earned emeritus status at Dow Corning Corp. after 34 years of service as a scientist and chemist, rising to Dow Corning’s highest scientific position of senior scientist before his retirement in 2000. In his consultancy business, he conducts contract research projects and provides technical consultation and expert witness services. 

A graduate of Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, Mich., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and education and a master’s degree in mathematics, Klosowski also holds a master’s in chemistry from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. He has written 63 articles published in various scientific and technical journals, as well as a book, Sealants in Construction, published in 1998.  Klosowski holds 34 U.S. patents and hundreds of foreign patents and has given more than 70 lectures in his field.

Outside ASTM International, Klosowski is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM) and a past member of the Advanced Building Technology Council of the National Academy of Science. He is also a lifetime member of the Sealant, Waterproofing and Restoration Institute (SWRI), where he received a Meritorious Service Award and an Award for Education and Advancing Sealant Technology. He also received the Adhesives Age Award for excellence in sealant science from the Adhesive and Sealant Council.
