Thomas S. Jones, quality manager and senior development engineer for Howmet Research Corporation in Whitehall, Mich., which provides materials and process research and development, manufacturing technology, and engineering services, has been elected to the Board of Directors for ASTM International in West Conshohocken, Pa. Jones, a resident of Norton Shores, Mich., will serve from 2005 to 2007.

In his position at Howmet, Jones maintains a quality management system for Howmets materials test and calibration laboratories. He is also responsible for identifying technologies and applications for nondestructive testing (NDT) in support of Howmet investment casting facilities worldwide. Before joining Howmet in 2001, Jones was with Industrial Quality, Inc., first as a senior engineer and then as vice president of research and engineering before assuming a senior development engineer position with Howmet.

After receiving his B.S. in engineering science and mechanics and his M.S. in engineering mechanics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Jones began his career at McDonnell Aircraft Company in St. Louis, Mo., as an engineer.

Jones is currently chair of ASTM Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing. He also actively participates in the standards development activities of Committees E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metals, Ores, and Related Materials, E04 on Metallography, and E28 on Mechanical Testing. Jones has been an E07 subcommittee chair as well as membership secretary, recording secretary, and vice chairman of E07.

He has served as a member of the Committee on Technical Committee Operations and as chair of its Technical Operations Subcommittee. E07 has recognized Jones contributions to the committee with five Certificates of Appreciation and the Charles W. Briggs Award.

A fellow of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), Jones serves on the Aerospace, Infrared, Penetrating Radiation and Ultrasonics Committee and on the Research Council; he is a former chairman of the Aerospace Committee and a former chairman of the ASNT St. Louis section. Jones is also a member of the American Society for Quality and American Scientific Affiliation. He has published numerous papers, given presentations, and reviewed papers for industry journals, including the ASTM Journal of Testing and Evaluation.
