ASTM International Committee F02 on Flexible Barrier Packaging has honored Hal Miller, president of PACE Solutions LLC in Cape May, N.J., with the Award of Merit and title of fellow for his contributions to global standards for the flexible packaging industry.  The Award of Merit is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.

Miller, who joined ASTM International in 1994, served as chairman of Committee F02 from 2006 to 2011. As a longtime F02 member, he led a reorganization effort for the committee and has helped F02 expand its international presence, culminating in the committee’s first European meetings in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2009. F02 recognized his efforts with the Award of Appreciation in 2002 and 2011. Miller is also a member of Committee D10 on Packaging.

A packaging professional for more than 35 years, Miller specializes in the design, development and technology of medical device packaging, particularly sterile medical devices. In 1981, he joined Johnson & Johnson as a senior packaging engineer. During his 23-year tenure, he worked in or managed the packaging development groups of Johnson & Johnson Products, Ortho Diagnostic Systems, Ethicon Inc. and Johnson & Johnson Corporate. He served as corporate director of packaging technology from 1992 until his retirement in 2004. His business PACE Solutions provides consulting services and training for all aspects of medical device packaging compliance.

A graduate of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J., where he received a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, Miller also holds a master’s degree in management from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J.

Outside ASTM International, Miller is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, the Health Industry Manufacturers Association, the International Safe Transit Association, the International Organization for Standardization and the Institute of Packaging Professionals. He also serves on the Editorial Board of Pharmaceutical and Medical Packaging News
