ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock has recognized the significant contributions of Gary Durham, Ph.D., president of Durham Holdings Inc., Atlanta, Georgia, with the A. Ivan Johnson Outstanding Achievement Award

Durham has been an active member of ASTM and Committee D18 for 44 years. The committee has called out his work with several awards, including the Technical Editors Award and Woodland G. Shockley Memorial Award. He received ASTM’s highest organizational award, the Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow, in 2007.

A graduate of the University of Alabama, where he received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Durham also earned a master’s in civil engineering from Mississippi State University and his doctorate in civil engineering from Oklahoma State University. The early part of his career was spent as a practicing geotechnical engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and various electrical utility companies. He went on to focus on the manufacturing and design of products for the geotechnical and construction industries at Brainard Kilman and then Durham Geo-Enterprises Inc., both in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He began his consulting work in 2009.

Outside ASTM, Durham is a member and fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a distinguished engineer fellow of the University of Alabama School of Engineering. He is a registered professional engineer in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.
