Dr. W. Mark McGinley, P.E., professor and endowed chair of infrastructure research, civil and environmental engineering, at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, has received an Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from ASTM International Committee C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units. The Award of Merit is the highest organizational honor for individual contributions to standards activities.

McGinley was cited "for outstanding dedication to and involvement in the entire masonry industry, and particularly the standards process, including research contributions related to the test methods and specifications originating in Committee C15 regarding the manufacture and use of units of fired clay and shale, concrete and sand-lime units."

An ASTM International member since 1990, McGinley is active in Committee C15, where he serves as second vice chairman on the main committee as well as member at large. He has led several C15 subcommittees and task groups and is the current chair of Subcommittee C15.07 on Standards for Laboratory Accreditation. In 2001, he was honored with the C15 Gilbert C. Robinson Award for his contributions. He is also a member of Committee C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry, where he is member-at-large and acts as chair of Subcommittee C12.07 on Laboratory Accreditation.

McGinley joined the faculty at the University of Louisville in 2007. Prior to that, he spent 19 years as professor and then chair in the civil, architectural, agricultural and environmental engineering department at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. He is a recognized expert in masonry building systems and masonry building envelopes. His research has focused on the structural performance of masonry walls, water penetration of building envelopes, and the performance of brick veneer and steel-stud wall systems. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 reports, papers and articles in his field.

Outside of ASTM International, McGinley is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers and the Masonry Society, where he serves on the Masonry Standards Joint Committee. He holds a B.Sc., a M.Sc., and a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Alberta.
