Stephen Graham, Ph.D., professor at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, has received the ASTM International Award of Merit. The award, which includes the accompanying title of ASTM fellow, is the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.

A member of ASTM International since 1990, Graham was honored for his exceptional technical and leadership contributions within ASTM Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture. This includes the development of fracture mechanics standards that are key to the structural integrity and reliability of welded structures. He currently serves as E08 membership secretary and chairs two E08 task groups. A frequent technical presenter at ASTM symposia, Graham is on the editorial board of the Journal of ASTM International and the ASTM Materials Performance and Characterization Journal.

In 2002, Graham joined the department of mechanical engineering at the Naval Academy, where he teaches courses in mechanics, design and robotics. Prior to that, he provided technical guidance to the U.S. Navy in areas of fatigue, fracture and structural integrity assessment at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, Metals Engineering Branch. Graham specializes in the role of materials in the safe and reliable performance of engineering structures, with emphasis on factors like flaws, defects and adverse environmental conditions that affect structural integrity.

A graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, Graham also holds an M.S. and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Southern Methodist University Dallas, Texas, and the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, respectively.
