ASTM International Committee D22 on Air Quality has presented its Moyer D. Thomas Award to consultant James R. Millette, Ph.D., of Lilburn, Georgia.
An ASTM member since 1986, Millette was cited for his outstanding leadership of Subcommittee D22.07 on Sampling and Analysis of Asbestos, on which he served as vice chairman from 1985 to 2007 and as chairman from 2007 to 2014. He currently holds the role of D22 vice chairman – technical, and also works on Committee D24 on Carbon Black. An ASTM fellow who received the Award of Merit in 2011, D22 has also honored Millette with four Awards of Appreciation.
An experienced research scientist in particulate analysis, environmental forensic microscopy and material science, and a recognized expert on the analysis of asbestos in air, dust and other media, Millette began his professional career in 1974 as a physical scientist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Research Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was then vice president/general manager of McCrone Environmental Services Inc. in Norcross, Georgia, before joining MVA Scientific Consultants, Duluth, Georgia, where he served as executive director from 1990 to 2014. He retired from MVA in October 2014 and now does part-time consulting work through Millette Technical Consulting.
A fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, Millette is a board certified diplomate of the International Board of Forensic Engineering Sciences. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society, American Industrial Hygiene Association, Environmental Information Association, Georgia Microscopical Society and Sigma Xi: the Scientific Research Society.
Millette holds a B.S. in physics from the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, an M.En. in environmental science from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and a Ph.D. in environmental science from the University of Cincinnati.
