Dennis W. Hetzner, Ph.D., a senior materials specialist for the Timken Co. in Canton, Ohio, has been honored with a 2006 ASTM International Award of Merit. Committee E04 on Metallography recognized Hetzner for his "outstanding contributions in advancing the standardization of quantitative materials characterization and leadership" in the committee. The Award of Merit, which is accompanied by the title of fellow, is the highest ASTM International recognition for individual participation in standards activities.

Hetzner lives in Canton, Ohio.

First vice chairman of E04 and chair of Subcommittee E04.05 on Microindentation Hardness Testing, Hetzner has also served as E04 membership secretary. He has been very involved with research related to high speed steel bearing alloys, symposia sponsored by E04, and standards development resulting from this work. In addition, he is a member of Subcommittee A01.28 on Bearing Steels, a part of ASTM Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys.

Outside ASTM International, Hetzner is a fellow of ASM International, president of the International Metallographic Society (IMS) and on the editorial board of Advanced Materials & Processes, an ASM International monthly publication. Hetzner is an associate editor of the international journal, Materials Characterization, published by Elsevier. He has also published a number of technical papers related to his work, has three U.S. patents related to high speed steels, and one patent pending.

Hetzner earned his B.S. and M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and his Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
