Andreas Wolf, Ph.D., senior scientist, high performance building solutions, at Dow Corning GmbH in Wiesbaden, Germany, has been named a 2014 William T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award recipient by ASTM International. Wolf was honored with the award for his leadership of and contributions to the development and worldwide acceptance of standards for the performance and durability of glazing, weatherproofing and structural sealants.

The William T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award commemorates W. T. Cavanaugh, chief executive officer of ASTM from 1970 to 1985, who firmly established ASTM International as the world leader in the development and dissemination of voluntary consensus standards.

Wolf, who joined ASTM International in 1989, is a member of Committees C24 on Building Seals and Sealants, E06 on Performance of Buildings and G03 on Weathering and Durability. In 2011, Wolf received an Award of Excellence from the ASTM Committee on Publications for his symposium and publications management, and in 2008, he was honored with the Lou Toporcer Hall of Fame Award by C24 for his service to the building seals and sealants industry and to ASTM Committee C24.

In his more than 35 years with the Dow Corning Corp., Wolf has held various scientist and managerial positions, specializing in insulating glass sealants, structural glazing/structural bonding, durability of sealants and adhesives, and adhesion theory and measurement. He has lectured extensively in Europe, North America and Asia, and is the author of more than 160 technical publications.

The holder of 21 U.S. and multiple foreign patents, Wolf has served as editor of nine books on various aspects of sealant chemistry, durability, testing and applications and has chaired multiple international scientific symposia. He is an editorial board member for ASTM’s Advances in Civil Engineering Materials and has been a guest editor for the Journal of ASTM International.

In addition to ASTM International, Wolf has been a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) since 1980, where he is currently chair of ISO TC59/SC8 Buildings and Civil Engineering Works – Sealants. He is also a senior member of the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM), where he has chaired three technical committees and contributed to the development of standards and technical recommendations. In addition, he is a member of the German Chemist Association (GdCh).

A graduate of Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, where he received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in chemistry, Wolf holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany.
