ASTM International Committee C24 on Building Seals and Sealants has named Christopher J. Sass, associate principal at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc. (WJE) in Detroit, Mich., as its new chairman. WJE is an interdisciplinary firm of structural engineers, architects and materials scientists that specializes in the investigation, analysis, testing and design of repairs for historic and contemporary structures.
Committee C24 has a membership of approximately 230 technical experts who oversee 95 ASTM International standards for building seals and sealants, including aerosol foam sealants, caulking compounds, elastomeric sealants, glazing compounds, preformed sealing tapes and preformed gaskets.
A member of ASTM International since 1996, Sass is the former chair of C24.10 on Specifications, Guides and Practices, one of the most active subcommittees in C24. The committee has honored him with the ASTM Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow as well as the Lou Toporcer Hall of Fame Award for his dedicated service.
Sass joined the Northbrook, Ill., office of WJE as a senior technician in 1985 after earning a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois. He was promoted to senior architect in 1987 and assumed his current role in 1998. Sass’ projects are focused on building envelopes, water infiltration, sealants, masonry, curtain walls, coatings, waterproofing membranes and roofing. He is a registered architect in the states of Illinois and Michigan.
Outside ASTM International, Sass sits on the board of trustees of the Masonry Institute of Michigan and is a member of the Masonry Institute's Generic Wall Design Committee. He is also a member of the Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA), where he acts as a judging team leader for BOMA’s Outstanding Building of the Year Award program, and he has provided guidance to university students studying architecture through the American Institute of Architects mentoring program.
