ASTM International has presented its Werner H. Gumpertz Award to Xia Cao, R&D manager at Saint Gobain North America (holding company of GCP Applied Technologies, Inc.) This eminent award is conferred for significant professional contributions to the field of building technology and multidisciplinary technical problem-solving in the construction industry.

Cao was recognized for her significant professional contributions through research, publications, and presentations, and her depth of expertise in building enclosure technology evidenced by years of product development experience and various patents.

An ASTM member since 2014, Cao is also a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

Cao’s decades-long career focus is waterproofing, building envelope, and infrastructure. Her extensive experience includes material science/engineering, structure and property relationship, chemical processing, and more. Prior to joining GCP Applied Technologies in 2019, she worked as a senior R&D chemist at W.R. Grace, following several other roles.

Cao received her Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Ohio State University in 2002.
