ASTM International Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings has presented the Award of Merit to Bruce Kaskel, principal and unit manager at Wiss Janney Elstner Associates Inc. (WJE) in Chicago, Ill. The Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities. WJE is an interdisciplinary firm of structural engineers, architects, and materials scientists that specializes in the investigation, analysis, testing, and design of repairs for historic and contemporary structures.

A member of ASTM International since 1988, Kaskel was recognized for his dedicated service to Committee E06 and his respected technical expertise in the development of standards that support the design, construction, evaluation and repair of exterior wall systems and fully integrated building enclosure performance.

Kaskel, who received an E06 Award of Appreciation in 2007, played a large role in the development of the committee’s standard ASTM E2099, Practice for the Specification and Evaluation of Pre-Construction Laboratory Mock-Ups of Exterior Wall Systems, which is now widely cited and specified throughout the industry. In addition to E06, Kaskel is an active member of Committees C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry and C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units.

A graduate of the University of Illinois, Chicago, where he received a master’s degree in architecture - structures option, Kaskel also holds a bachelor’s degree in architectural studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He joined WJE in 1985 and assumed his current role in 2002. Kaskel has investigated and designed repairs for a wide range of distress conditions in existing buildings, and is recognized nationally as an expert in exterior wall systems related to glass, glazing, water infiltration, corrosion, structural adequacy, energy performance, anchorage devices and durability.

A LEED-accredited professional, Kaskel is a licensed architect in the states of Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin and a registered structural engineer in Illinois. He serves on the board of governors of the Insulating Glass Certification Council and is a past president of the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois.
