Michael Schmeida, corporate manager – stewardship, at The Oatey Co., Cleveland, Ohio, has been elected chairman of ASTM International Committee E60 on Sustainability.
Committee E60, with a current membership of more than 730 technical experts, develops ASTM standards that address environmental, social, economic and other issues relating to sustainability and sustainable development. The seven E60 subcommittees currently oversee 25 standards on various sustainability related topics, including building and construction, wastewater, green roofs, meetings and events, manufacturing and more, with several new standards in development.
A member of ASTM International since 2005, Schmeida also chairs the E60 group on Strategic Planning (E60.91). He works on several other ASTM committees as well, including B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys, D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, D10 on Packaging, D14 on Adhesives, D22 on Air Quality, E05 on Fire Standards and F17 on Plastic Piping Systems.
Schmeida joined The Oatey Co., a plumbing products manufacturer, in 2013. Prior to that he was product manager, sustainability manager and director of compliance and sustainability at Tremco Commercial Sealants and Waterproofing, Beachwood, Ohio. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from the University of Akron, Akron, Ohio.
A LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited professional, Schmeida is active in code development for the International Code Council, including the International Green Construction Code and the International Energy Conservation Code. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), ASME International, the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) and the Plastic Pipe Fittings Association (PPFA).
