ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and the ASTM Committee on Standards have presented the Frank W. Reinhart Award to Lyle O. Bowman, a technical consultant based in San Rafael, Calif. The award honors Dr. Frank W. Reinhart, long active in ASTM terminology work, who exemplified the intent of the award through his dedication to the use of correct and appropriate technical terminology in ASTM standards.

A member of ASTM International and Committee D02 for 34 years, Bowman was specifically cited for his outstanding contributions to terminology relating to petroleum products and lubricants. He has worked extensively with many D02 subcommittees to develop a comprehensive dictionary for use in the petroleum industry, and was instrumental in the development of D02’s terminology standard, ASTM D4175, which was first approved in 1983. An ASTM fellow who received the Award of Merit in 1989, Bowman has chaired the editorial subcommittee section (D02.B0.09) since 1986. He also served a term on the ASTM Committee on Technical Committee Operations (COTCO) from 1987 to 1989.

Bowman retired in 1988 after 37 years of service to Chevron Corp. in San Francisco, Calif., where he specialized in engine lubricating oil additives. He started as a lubrication research engineer, spent time as the worldwide marketing manager for Oronite Additives, a division of Chevron, and then served as technical coordinator of Chevron product development. He holds a B.S. and an M.S. in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University, Corvallis, Ore.
