During a visit to the United States in May, Young-ghil Cheon, president of Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL) met with ASTM International President Andy Kireta in Washington, DC, and signed a Memorandum of Cooperation between their respective organizations on development of standards for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and other emerging areas in aviation.
“The collaboration between ASTM and KCL reflects our dedication to global cooperation in driving meaningful progress and advancing emerging technologies that will benefit communities around the world,” Kireta said.
President Cheon led a KCL delegation that included Deok Ryong Yoo, executive director of KCL’s Strategic Business Division, and Yoonseok Chung, head of the Aerospace Strategy Center. During the meeting, Chung gave a presentation on KCL’s aviation activities. Phil Kenul, vice chair of ASTM Committee F38 on Unmanned Aircraft Systems, gave a presentation on ASTM’s work in these areas.
“The establishment of this cooperative framework with ASTM for standards development will serve as a catalyst for building the aerospace industry ecosystem,” said Cheon. “Facilitating knowledge exchange and encouraging Korean participation in standard development will contribute to a safer and more innovative aerospace sector."
The KCL visit followed Kireta’s January visit to KCL’s offices in Korea.
“Today’s return visit, culminating with the signing of our Memorandum of Cooperation deepens our spirit of mutual exchange and shared purpose,” added Kireta. “This partnership symbolizes a commitment to advancing global standards, transforming markets, fostering innovation, and enhancing the safety, quality, and performance in the unmanned aircraft systems and aerospace sectors.”
