Robert T. Shannon, radioanalytical consultant at Quality Radioanalytical Support LLC, Grand Marais, Minn., has received the ASTM International Max Hecht Award for his outstanding service to Committee D19 on Water.
A member of ASTM International since 2000, Shannon has received three Standards Development Awards from Committee D19 during his tenure. He also serves on ASTM Committee C26 on Nuclear Fuel Cycle.
Shannon has supported government and independent commercial testing laboratory needs as a radiochemist for more than 20 years. His consulting work at Quality Radioanalytical Support, which he founded in 2006, has supported federal agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey. He has helped author guidance documents, develop radioanalytical methods, perform extensive training for the EPA, and support private and commercial laboratories on technical and quality related issues. Shannon also contributes nationally to methods, standards and QA system development.
Outside ASTM International, Shannon is chair of the NELAC Institute (TNI) Radiochemistry Expert Committee, and Part Coordinator for Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, Part 7000 Radiochemistry, a joint publication of the American Public Health Association, the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Water Works Association and the Health Physics Society.
Shannon holds a bachelor’s degree from Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa, and studied at the Albert-Ludwigs Universität School of Earth Studies in Freiburg Germany.
