Vincenzo Fioravante, Ph.D., full professor of soil mechanics and foundation engineering at the University of Ferrara in Ferarra, Italy, has received the C.A. Hogentogler Award from ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock.

The Hogentogler Award is an annual award given to the author or authors of a paper of outstanding merit on soil and/or rock for engineering purposes that is published by the Society. Fioravante received the award for his paper, “Physical Modeling of Landslide Stabilization Methods in an Overconsolidated Clay,” which appeared in the 2008 ASTM Geotechnical Testing Journal.

Before accepting the appointment of chair at the University of Ferrara in 2000, Fioravante was head of the Geotechincal Unit at ISMES S.p.A., the Italian Research Center of Civil Engineering. In 2000, he founded the ISMES Geotechnical Co., now known as ISMGEO (Istituto Sperimentale Modelli GEOtechnici). At the university, he teaches courses in basic soil mechanics, foundation engineering and advanced soil mechanics.

Fioravante has been a member of ASTM International and Committee D18 since 1999. He is also a member of the Italian Geotechnical Society, the Italian Institution of Civil Engineers, the British Geotechnical Association and the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering.

This is the second time Fioravante has won the Hogentogler Award; he also won the award in 1997 for the paper, “Automatic Volume Measuring Device for Testing Dry Soils: Martina.” He is the author of more than 70 scientific publications related to the characterization of soils, soil structure and foundations, soil reinforcing, and calibration chamber and geotechnical centrifuge tests. He holds a doctorate in geotechnics from Politecnico di Torino, Torino, Italy.
