ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics has presented its Award of Excellence to Gary Cornell, quality and standards manager at Q-Lab Corp., a global provider of material durability testing products located in Westlake, Ohio.
D20 noted Cornell’s exemplary technical contributions and valued leadership as a committee member since 2005. He currently serves as the committee’s vice chairman-methods and leads the subcommittee on Durability of Plastics. Cornell is active on several other ASTM committees as well, including D01 on Paint, Related Coatings, Materials and Applications, where he is membership secretary and secretary of D01.27 on Accelerated Testing. He also works on committees covering building sealants, wood, roofing, rubber, textiles, solar energy and more, and serves on the ASTM Standing Committee on Certification Programs.
A graduate of Cleveland State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Cornell joined Q-Lab in 2005. Prior to that he was lab manager at global specialty chemical manufacturer PolyOne Corp. in Avon Lake, Ohio. He also consults on lab operations, audits, training and quality management systems through his company Cornell Quality Consulting (CQC), which he started in 2003. Cornell works directly with the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) as a technical expert in the areas of mechanical and chemical testing, delivering on-site assessments to a wide range of manufacturing and testing laboratories.
A certified medical laboratory technician, Cornell is a member of the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation, the American Architectural Manufacturers Association, SAE International, the Synthetic Turf Council and the Vinyl Siding Institute in addition to ASTM International.
