Richard Sutherlin, metallurgical and corrosion consultant since 2015, has received the 2021 William J. Kroll Zirconium Medal from ASTM International for his contributions to the reactive and refractory metals and alloys committee (B10).

Sutherlin was recognized for leading the effort to establish zirconium as a proven, reliable, and economical material of choice for use in the chemical industry and for his educational and training presentations worldwide in design, failure analysis, fabrication practices and corrosion properties for zirconium products.

A long-time ASTM International member, Sutherlin had been previously honored by the committee with the H.D. “Russ” Ogden Award (2013). Sutherlin was also honored by the ASME BPV II Standards Committee with the 2021 Gold Standard Award.

Sutherlin began his own firm, Richard Sutherlin PE Consulting LLC, in 2015. Prior to this, he worked 38 years at ATI in Albany, Oregon. He graduated from the Montana School of Mines in 1977 with a bachelor of science in metallurgical engineering, and his professional memberships include the American Welding Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers.
