Reed Eppelheimer, a graduate student in the School of Packaging at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich., is the first recipient of the new ASTM International Graduate Scholarship.

Established in 2009 to coincide with ASTM’s Year of the Professor initiative, the ASTM International Graduate Scholarship rewards graduate students who have demonstrated high levels of interest in or involvement with ASTM International standards.

Eppelheimer, who holds bachelor’s degrees in both packaging and supply chain management, both from Michigan State University, has contributed to the development of key standards on auto-ID technologies, including radio frequency identification systems (RFID), barcodes and other developing systems, for ASTM International Committee D10 on Packaging.  He has participated in committee meetings and is currently doing research for the development of future D10 standards.

A research assistant at the Michigan State University Auto-ID Research and Testing Center since 2006, Eppelheimer started his graduate work in 2008, choosing the thesis topic: RFID transponder read issues for inventory management of archaeological artifacts.

A former member of the Institute of Packaging Professionals and the honorary packaging fraternity Pi Kappa Gamma, Eppelheimer has made presentations at the annual Michigan State University Packaging Executive Conference and at the 2008 International Association of Packaging Research Institutes World Conference on Packaging in Bangkok, Thailand.
