Mike Birke, senior research scientist at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio, Texas, has received the ASTM International Daniel H. Green Award. ASTM Committee D15 on Engine Coolants and Related Fluids presented the award to Birke in recognition of his many years of outstanding service and active participation in the development of standards.

Birke works on several D15 subcommittees, and is also a member of Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, where he is vice chairman of Subcommittee D02.06 on Analysis of Lubricants, and surveillance panel chair for the group on Elastomer Testing. Previous awards include the D15 Raymond H. Rudisell Award in 2006 and a D02 Award of Appreciation in 2010. Birke has been an ASTM member since 1999.

A graduate of the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Birke’s professional work is focused on standardized lubricants, fuels and coolant testing. He joined Southwest Research Institute as a scientist in 1994, was promoted to research scientist in 2001 and assumed his current role in 2008.
