Paul D. Roman, executive director of the New Jersey EMT Registry in Shrewsbury, N.J., has received the ASTM International Award of Merit from Committee F30 on Emergency Medical Services. The award is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities, and includes the accompanying title of fellow.

Roman was honored for his leadership and expertise in the development of national consensus standards covering equipment, training, personnel and communications in the emergency medical services sector. Several ASTM F30 communications standards have been accepted by the U.S. Department of Transportation as national consensus standards, adopted by state EMS offices and written into state statutes and regulations.

A member of ASTM International since 1984, Roman served as F30 chairman from 2004 to 2010 and is currently the committee’s vice chairman. He works on several other ASTM committees in addition to F30, including E34 on Occupational Health and Safety, E54 on Homeland Security Applications, F15 on Consumer Products, F20 on Hazardous Substances and Oil Spill Response, F29 on Anesthetic and Respiratory Equipment and F32 on Search and Rescue.

Roman’s career has focused on all aspects of emergency medical services work, including training, education, consultation, sales, marketing and operations. He is the fourth most active senior Registered Emergency Medical Technician (REMT) in the U.S., a certified instructor/coordinator of basic EMT training programs for both civilian and military organizations, and a CPR instructor and emergency response instructor for the American Red Cross.

Outside ASTM International, Roman is a member of the National Association of County and City Health Officials, the National Association of EMS Educators, the N.J. Fire Safety Commission’s Training and Education Advisory Council and a life member of the Reserve Officers Association of the United States and the Shrewsbury Volunteer First Aid Squad. 

He is also president of the Monmouth County Regional Health Commission and a past president of the N.J. Local Boards of Health Association, the N.J. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Institute and the Shrewsbury, N.J., Local Board of Health, and a past chairman of the board of the American Red Cross Jersey Coast Chapter.

Roman has written EMS and public health articles for various industry publications, including the Air Medical Journal, Journal of Emergency Medical Services, EMS World Magazine and Gold Cross Magazine. He also served as editor for three editions of ASTM Standards on Emergency Medical Services.
