William F. Edelen, vice president of engineering at Froehling & Robertson Inc., Charlotte, N.C., has received the ASTM International A. Ivan Johnson Award for his significant contributions to the work of ASTM Committee D18 on Soil and Rock.

A member of ASTM International since 1986, Edelen is a D18 vice chairman, a member at large on the executive subcommittee, and works on multiple subcommittees. He was honored with a Special Service Award from the committee in 2007, and has received the Richard S. Ladd Standards Development Award twice, in 2005 and 2009.

A graduate of the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering, Edelen joined Froehling & Robertson in 1982 as a branch manager. He left in 1989 to serve as a geotechnical manager at The EDGE Group before returning to Froehling & Robertson in 1991. He assumed his current role at the company in 2005. 

In addition to ASTM International, Edelen is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Geo-Institute, the American Public Works Association, the Association of Drilled Shaft Contractors, the American Council of Engineering Companies and the American Society of Highway Engineers.
