ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock has presented the Woodland G. Shockley Memorial Award to Ronald Holsinger, proficiency sample program supervisor at the AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory in Frederick, Md.
Holsinger, who serves as D18 vice chairman, was honored for his exceptional and long-term service to the standards development activities of the committee. A member of ASTM International since 1990, Holsinger is also a member at large on Committee E11 on Quality and Statistics and serves on Committees C01 on Cement and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates in addition to D18. D18 has recognized his past contributions with the Richard S. Ladd Standards Development Award and the A. Ivan Johnson Outstanding Achievement Award.
A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pa., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in secondary education, Holsinger spent 17 years as a high school math and science teacher before beginning his career in construction materials testing at AASHTO in 1990. He was an assessor and supervisor in the soil program before assuming his current role in 2001. The AASHTO sample program for proficiency testing of construction materials distributes test samples of materials like soil, crushed stone and asphalt for comparison testing to more than 2,200 laboratories and approximately 30 countries outside the United States.
In addition to ASTM International, Holsinger is a member of the American Concrete Institute and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Virginia.
