ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock has recognized the exceptional and longtime service of professional engineer William F. Edelen of Mint Hill, North Carolina, with the Woodland G. Shockley Memorial Award.
Edelen has worked on multiple D18 subcommittees since joining ASTM in 1986, and has served terms as D18 vice chairman and as a member at large on the executive subcommittee. The committee has honored him with several awards for his contributions, including the Richard S. Ladd Standards Development Award and the A. Ivan Johnson Outstanding Achievement Award.
A graduate of the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering, Edelen spent much of his career at Froehling & Robertson Inc., Charlotte, North Carolina, where he served as a branch manager and regional vice president, retiring in 2012. He also held geotechnical managerial roles at The EDGE Group in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Law Engineering Testing Co. in Jacksonville, Florida, and Nashville, Tennessee.
Outside ASTM, Edelen is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and its Geo-Institute, the American Society of Highway Engineers and the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. He is a registered professional engineer in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
