ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics has presented the 2009 Award of Excellence to Francis (Bud) Hewitt, a retired senior chemist from Evonik Cyro LLC in Wallingford, Conn.  

The D20 Award of Excellence recognizes outstanding personal performance in the field of plastics, and is presented to a committee member who has contributed the most toward the development and use of consensus standards or who has fostered competency and proficiency in the plastics field. 

Hewitt has been an active member of ASTM and Committee D20 since 1986. He works on several D20 subcommittees, and currently chairs Subcommittee D20.15 on Thermoplastic Materials. The committee has honored his work in the past with an Award of Appreciation in 2000, an Award of Recognition in 2003 and the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2006. 

After earning a master’s degree in chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass., in 1960, Hewitt worked as a research and analytical chemist at American Cyanamid Co. in Wallingford, Conn.  He then accepted an analytical chemist position at CYRO Industries (then a Cyanamid joint venture, now Evonik Cyro LLC) in Stamford, Conn., in 1976.  He went on to hold various positions during his almost 45 years at Cyanamid and CYRO, including senior chemist, product services manager and supervisor of the analytical laboratory, where his focus was analytical chemistry and compliance of CYRO/Evonik products such as acrylic and modified acrylic plastics to regulatory and consensus standards. He retired from Evonik Cyro LLC in 2005.

Outside ASTM International, Hewitt is an emeritus member of the American Chemical Society and a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers.
