Hany Demian, senior biomedical engineer at the Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Office of Device Evaluation, at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Silver Spring, Md., has received the Patrick G. Laing Award from ASTM International for his outstanding contributions in the medical and surgical devices field. The Laing Award is Committee F04’s highest-level award.

Demian has been a member of ASTM International and Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices since 1995. He currently serves as F04 general interest vice chairman and as secretary of Subcommittee F04.11 on Polymeric Materials. Previous F04 honors include the Leroy Wyman Award in 2008 and the Robert E. Fairer Award in 2000.

A graduate of Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., where he received a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and a master’s in bioengineering, Demian joined the FDA in 1994. He has held various engineering positions related to polymeric materials and orthopedics and acts as an FDA liaison to ASTM International and other standards organizations. In 2007, he became a master level reviewer through a peer review process in the Center for Devices and Radiological Health. 

Demian has contributed to several medical industry publications and presentations and holds one patent regarding PMMA bone cement.
