Dr. Kenneth L. Jerina, senior professor of engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, was honored with the Coffin-Manson Fatigue Achievement Award from ASTM International’s committee on fatigue and fracture (E08). 

The award was established in 1986 and is presented to those individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the field of fatigue of materials.  

Jerina joined ASTM International in 1973. The committee previously honored Jerina with the Award of Appreciation (1999 and 2013), and the Award of Merit (2003). 

An active member of multiple ASTM committees for over 40 years, Jerina has been a key player in applying and extending the technologies of fatigue and fracture to the emerging domains of advanced engineered materials. In the process, he has helped establish new thrusts and new focus areas within the committee, particularly through his leadership of the task group on advanced materials (E08.05.04).  

Jerina previously served as the Earl E. and Myrtle E. Walker professor of engineering and associate chairman of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Washington University in St. Louis, assistant professor with Texas A&M University, director of the Experimental Mechanics Research Laboratory with MTS Systems Corporation, and research engineer with the US Air Force Materials Laboratory. He holds a bachelor’s degree in theoretical and applied mechanics from the University of Illinois, and both a master’s degree and a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering from Washington University. 

Jerina is a registered professional engineer and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education, and Sigma Xi.
