ASTM International Committee D09 on Electrical and Electronic Insulating Materials will host a presentation of the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive during their meeting in Philadelphia, Pa. on March 15. The meeting will run from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and will be followed by a social hour.

Electrical equipment marketed in the EU after July 1, 2006, must comply with the requirements of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive. "Because the directive is not sufficiently comprehensive, the presentation will cover numerous questions regarding acceptable test methods and definitions of homogeneous material," says George Fechtmann, chair of Committee D09. "Several methods of demonstrating compliance will be discussed, including self-declaration, in-house testing, third party testing and continued compliance."

As a response to the RoHS and other directives, ASTM International has formed Committee F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials. Committee F40 will work with D09 and other relevant ASTM committees to ensure that all ASTM resources are maximized in this area.
