ASTM International Committee C24 on Building Seals and Sealants has honored Christopher J. Sass, associate principal at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc. (WJE) in Detroit, Mich., with the Award of Merit. WJE is an interdisciplinary firm of structural engineers, architects, and materials scientists that specializes in the investigation, analysis, testing, and design of repairs for historic and contemporary structures.

Sass received the Award of Merit, ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities, for “meritorious and dedicated service to Committee C24 with a strong commitment to standards development, especially in the area of building seals and sealants, and for respected technical expertise, outstanding leadership and exemplary professionalism.” 
 
A member of ASTM International since 1996, Sass serves as secretary of Committee C24 and chairs one of the most active C24 subcommittees, C24.10 on Specifications, Guides and Practices. The committee has recognized his past contributions with an Award of Appreciation and the Lou Toporcer Hall of Fame Award.

Sass joined the Northbrook, Ill., office of WJE as a senior technician in 1985 after earning a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois. He was promoted to senior architect in 1987 and assumed his current role in 1998. Sass’ projects are focused on building envelopes, water infiltration, sealants, masonry, curtain walls, coatings, waterproofing membranes and roofing. He is a registered architect in the states of Illinois and Michigan. 

Outside ASTM International, Sass sits on the board of trustees of the Masonry Institute of Michigan and is a member of the Masonry Institute's Generic Wall Design Committee. He is also a member of the Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA), where he acts as a judging team leader for BOMA’s Outstanding Building of the Year Award program, and he has provided guidance to university students studying architecture through the American Institute of Architects mentoring program.
