The Sustainable City to Host the Developer of Sustainability Standards for Policy Meetings and Outreach
ASTM International, a leading developer of standards and related technical solutions, will be holding its semiannual Board of Directors meeting in Chicago. The ASTM board meetings, as well as other events, will take place Oct. 13-16, 2013.
The 25-member ASTM International board of directors comprises industry and government executives engaged in standards activities, including senior executives from leading global companies such as Dow Corning and Mattel/Fisher-Price, regulatory personnel from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
ASTM Outreach Day
In addition to the formal policy-making sessions, the 2013 “Board of Directors Outreach Day” is scheduled to take place in around Chicago on Tuesday, Oct. 15, when board members and executive staff will meet with the leadership of trade associations, corporations, government and non-governmental organizations. Traditionally, Outreach Day meetings have been very successful in focusing on current topics, future endeavors, as well as strategic planning for what is next to come as partners. Currently ASTM is preparing to build upon a solid foundation of outreach success from similar events that took place in London, New York City and Tokyo.
The city of Chicago and the surrounding area is home to more than 1,000 active ASTM members representing nearly all 143 ASTM technical committees. If you have not been contacted directly and would like to participate in the 2013 ASTM International Outreach Day program, please contact Mark Axelman, ASTM manager, business development (phone: 215-917-0699; maxelman@astm.org).
Chicago - A Sustainable City
“Choosing Chicago as the location for our board of directors meeting is an example of ASTM standards in action,” says ASTM International President James A. Thomas. “With the recent release of the complete suite of ASTM standards covering sustainability regarding destinations and events, these ASTM documents are benchmarks. Chicago is one of the first cities in the world to achieve certification as a sustainable destination, a distinction which is based on ASTM standards.”
ASTM’s green meeting standards are the first to provide comprehensive performance requirements for nine areas of meeting and event production, ranging from accommodations to food, and meeting venues to transportation. The standards provide event planners and suppliers with specifications for producing events in a more sustainable manner.
Further refining Chicago’s environmental focus is the city’s Sustainable Chicago 2015 initiative, a roadmap that sets goals, actions and commitments toward sustainability. ASTM standards address many of the sectors covered in Sustainable Chicago 2015, including clean energy, transportation, water and wastewater and recycling.
